Collaborative Analysis Gallery Walk
Today we will be furthering our academic conversation regarding imperialism by examining political cartoons of the period. Each group member should take upon themselves ONE analyst role (smaller groups can combine the visual and language analyst roles): ·Symbologist: responsible for analyzing the symbols used in the cartoon ·Historian: places the cartoon in a specific historic moment ·Visual Analyst: describes and analyzes the visual elements of the cartoon ·Language Analyst: describes and analyzes the language elements of the cartoon ·Scribe: completes the analysis form and takes group notes Once you’ve identified the persuasive techniques that the cartoonist used, your group can discuss:

Rise of Nationalism
Day 1/2 Assignment:
The increase in the standard of living brought about by the Industrial Revolution contributed to renewed nationalism in both established nations and newly forming nation-states. Half the class will examine rising nationalism on day 1 and half will examine rising imperialism. Group 1: Germany Group 2:Italy Group 3: Japan Group 4: Ottomans Use your textbook, weebly ppts, and the internet to research your assigned topic. Each group will prepare a poster for the class to share their research findings. This will count as an informal grade. |

Berlin Conference Simulation
Day 3 Assignment: Prep
Task National Participants: Your task today and tomorrow is to recreate the Berlin Conference and divide Africa according to the interests of your assigned country. Your group will draft a proposal that explains the rules that you feel European countries should follow when colonizing Africa and which parts of Africa you reasonably believe your country should be able to colonize. Once you have created your proposal and your group members agree, one member will present it to the combined class section. The proposal should include: o No more than two rules that you feel European countries should follow when colonizing the land. o Shade the regions on the map provided that you feel your country should maintain and control. o Explain why your group would like to colonize this region. o Explain why the other representatives should allow your country to colonize this region. Things to consider when drafting your proposal: o Be sure to create rules that your country is willing and able to follow o Location, Location, Location o Natural Resources o The industrial needs of your country o The information on your country’s information card Some students will be assigned non-national roles such as journalist, Conference scribe, or non-governmental observer. Those students will: o Investigate an actual historical paper or organization that might have attended.
